Today we went to see The Penguin Lessons. I enjoyed the film for the human story of a middle-aged British man who had lost a child and, as a result, was an embodiment of cynicism, who kept himself to himself, but the backdrop was 1976 Argentina, where people were being disappeared.
Needless to say, the man, who was working as a teacher in a boys’ school whilst travelling through South America, went on quite a physical and emotional journey as a teacher, a human and ultimately, as an activist. There were themes of loss, liberty, freedom and redemption throughout the film.
The others were more interested in the antics of the penguin, which they considered to be very cute and comedic and, as a result, thoroughly enjoyed the film for those reasons.
I gave the film a score of 8/10.
