Quercus Robur – The joy of English oak

Sturdy and tall.
Robust in the gap,
like nature’s wall.
Royal heart of English sap.

Air-filled, tannin scent
and leaves of pale green,
acorns in cupules rent,
branches high, scarcely seen.

King of the forest,
or in panelled rooms,
rough bark best
for Druids, brides and grooms.

Oak tree creaking.
For many, a home on high.
A thousand years seeking
the bounteous light of the sky
