Learning to soar...

Changing The Guard – Marking a new beginning

Who’s there?
This changing of the guard
marks a new beginning where
fair question becomes quite hard.

Another passage
from one age to another stage
in life’s little struggle and search
for meaning.
We seem to lurch
from one answer to another,
seeking solace from sister and brother,
asking what we inherit.
What was it of our parents
that was of merit, and considered worthwhile
to pass on as parents, what becomes our style?

Can we forgive ourselves
for our lives lived thus far?
Has our star burned out, or are
we still burning bright,
still searching for the light?

Everything slows, tightens,
thickens, from midriffs,
clothes and skin to thoughts
of what could have been.

Introspection has its place,
and reflection helps us pace
and determine where we are now,
helps us sail on the river’s flow.
So, whilst changing of the guard
can sometimes be hard,
a fresh new look helps us recognise,
if not who we are now,
at least what’s there behind the eyes,
and how much more that we can grow.
