30 March 2026 – Cinema Club went to see ‘Reminders of Him’ today.  The synopsis on the cinema website was as follows:

“After a perfect outing with her boyfriend, Kenna makes an unbearable mistake that sends her to prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns home, hoping to rebuild her life and reunite with her daughter, Diem. When Diem’s grandparents refuse, Kenna discovers unexpected compassion and something more, with local bar owner Ledger. As their secret romance develops, so do the dangers, leading to heartbreak and a hope for a second chance.”

The leading members of the cast were: Maika Monroe, Tyriq Withers, Rudy Pankow, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford; and the film was directed by Vanessa Caswill, who also directed ‘Love at First Sight’ in 2023.  The producer was Lauren Levine, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Colleen Hoover, who also wrote the novel.

The plot, setting and acting all seemed pretty good to me, although not especially outstanding, but there was enough ongoing tension to carry the story along quite well, and enough sentimentality to find it a touching drama, worth watching.  Two other members of cinema club largely thought the same as me, but perhaps a bit more generously, whilst the fourth member thought it was ok, but perhaps not his favourite kind of film.

Mark Kermode, describing the film, pretty much described it as the film that you knew already, if you had seen the trailer.  I gave it a score of 7, whilst IMDB gave it 6.4 and the Rotten Tomatoes score was 5.6 (56%).
