4 April 2026 – I went on my own to The Odeon to see ‘The Drama’ today. The synopsis on the cinema website was as follows:
“A happily engaged couple is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails.”
Thus, nothing much is revealed, here, and the trailer only hints at what might be going on. When the film is viewed, you can see why that approach was chosen by the A24 studio.
The leading members of the cast were: Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Alana Haim, Mamoudou Athie; and the film was directed by Kristoffer Borgli, who also wrote the screenplay. He is also known for directing ‘Dream Scenario’ in 2023.
The plot, setting and acting was exceptionally good, and once the secret was revealed, the story developed in both a very serious way, but with some dark humour interspersed, all along the way, with a redemptive ending for both parties, despite the rough path experienced in getting there. I was very impressed by this film, and would recommend it to others, considering it the best on offer since seeing ‘Hamnet’ earlier in the year.
Mark Kermode had lots to say about this film, probably because he seemed to like it as much as I did. He described it variously as “Darkly satirical non-rom-com”, “Toe-curling, black comedy”, “Excruciating in a good way”, “Pointed, political satire” and “The script is outlandish, but not ludicrous”. He additionally commented that the performances from Zendaya and Robert Pattinson were “near-perfect”.
I gave it a score of 9, whilst IMDB gave it 7.5, and the Rotten Tomatoes score was 7.6 (76%).
This film is due to be watched, now, by the Cinema Club members on 13 April.
